From Kumeyaay routes through Rose Canyon to the arrival of UC San Diego and the community that grew around it.
Before University City
The area is part of the ancestral homeland of the Kumeyaay. A trade route linked the coast, Rose Canyon and Sorrento Valley, later becoming part of El Camino Real.
Camp Matthews
A military rifle range operated on what is now the UC San Diego campus from 1917 until 1964. The university’s development reshaped the mesa.
A neighborhood takes shape
South University City residential development began in 1960. Rose Canyon became a defining green seam between South UC and the denser homes and workplaces to the north.
The Golden Triangle
Today, University City is known for research, biotech, education, transit and Westfield UTC—while its canyons and neighborhood institutions preserve a strong local identity.
